Saudi Domestic Worker Visa Process Explained

Hiring a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia involves several legal and administrative steps. Understanding the visa process is essential to avoid delays, penalties, or compliance issues.

In this guide, Ministry of Helpers explains the Saudi domestic worker visa process step by step, including requirements, approvals, medical tests, and final residency procedures.

Step 1: Check your eligibility as an employer

Before applying, you must meet Saudi government requirements to sponsor a domestic worker.

General eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a Saudi citizen or eligible expatriate
  • Meet minimum income requirements
  • Have a clean legal record
  • No outstanding violations related to domestic workers
  • Registered in the Musaned system

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) evaluates eligibility before allowing a visa request.

Step 2: Apply through Musaned

All domestic worker visa applications are processed through Musaned, Saudi Arabia’s official platform for household worker recruitment.

Through Musaned, you will:

  • Submit your visa request
  • Choose the worker’s nationality
  • Select a recruitment office
  • Review contract terms
  • Pay government fees

Once approved, a visa authorisation number is issued.

Step 3: Pay government visa fees

The standard government fee for a domestic worker visa is typically SAR 2,000 (subject to change based on regulations).

Additional costs may include:

  • Recruitment agency fees
  • Overseas processing fees
  • Travel expenses

Always confirm updated fees through official channels or your recruitment agency.

Step 4: Overseas processing & medical examination

After visa approval, the recruitment agency coordinates with an approved agency in the worker’s home country.

At this stage:

  • The worker signs the employment contract
  • Medical examinations are conducted
  • Required training or orientation may be completed (depending on nationality)
  • Exit clearance from the home country is obtained

Medical fitness clearance is mandatory before travel.

Step 5: Arrival in Saudi Arabia

Once the domestic worker arrives:

  • The employer must complete medical testing again (if required locally)
  • Biometrics are registered
  • Health insurance is issued
  • The Iqama (residency permit) is processed

The employer is legally responsible for completing these procedures within the required timeframe.

Step 6: Issuance of Iqama

The Iqama officially allows the domestic worker to legally reside and work in Saudi Arabia.

The employer must:

  • Pay Iqama issuance fees
  • Ensure medical insurance is active
  • Keep residency valid at all times

Failure to issue or renew the Iqama on time may result in fines.

Important employer responsibilities

Under Saudi regulations, employers must:

  • Provide suitable accommodation
  • Pay salary on time (as per contract)
  • Provide health insurance
  • Allow rest days as agreed in contract
  • Respect contract terms registered in Musaned

Non-compliance can result in penalties or suspension from future recruitment.

How long does the process take?

On average, the full domestic worker visa process may take:

  • 1–3 weeks for Saudi approval
  • 2–8 weeks for overseas processing (depending on nationality)

Processing times vary by country and documentation readiness.

The Saudi domestic worker visa process involves several structured steps, from eligibility approval to Iqama issuance. Understanding each stage helps ensure compliance and smooth onboarding.
